Colony News

There are many things that will mark 2011. Earthquake. Tsunami. Uprising. Overthrow. Civil war. All will etch their marks on the time-line we call history.

Perhaps we'll remember the spring of 2011 as the reluctant spring, a coy and teasing lover. Advancing early only to retreat behind winter's snowy skirts, advancing again, just enough to keep the hope alive that soon the lengthening days wlll turn warm and skies will clear. The returning birds sing and chatter a heartening counterpoint to the snow and sleet that still fall from flat grey skies. Spring will come. And after, summer will surely follow.

Or perhaps, we'll remember the spring of 2011 as the beginning of yet another exciting season here in the hollow. The schedules have been made, the artists notified of their accomplishment, and 20 literary and visual artists have begun to make their plans to come to the Saltonstall Arts Colony this summer. In a mere six weeks the first 5 artists will arrive to spend a month here in the peace and quiet of the Saltonstall Arts Colony.

As ever, the jurors were presented with a very difficult task this year.  From the 163 applications of remarkable quality that were submitted this year, the jurors had to choose only 20 who would be granted the opportunity and privilege of spending a month at the colony. By the end of September 20 literary and visual artists from all corners of New York State will have spent a month at the Saltonstall Arts Colony, making pictures, printing, writing, reworking, editing, renewing.

The Saltonstall Foundation is proud to have hosted more than 200 hundred artists and writers who have been awarded residencies at the Saltonstall Arts Colony. Every year the jurors continue to be impressed with the quality of applicants, and often the decisions, as to who will be awarded a residency, are difficult to reach.

There are two-three jurors for each of the four categories, Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction, Photography, and Painting/Sculpture/Visual Arts. The jurors are chosen from an ever-growing list of serious and highly qualified artists in each discipline. Every year the jurors take their charge very seriously, and every year we are graced with the very best artists and writers New York State has to offer.

Open Studio Sundays

At the end of each session there is the opportunity for the artists to show the public what they have been doing during their month in residence, and for the public to visit The Saltonstall Arts Colony. Except for these four Sunday afternoons the colony is closed to the public from mid-May through the end of September. Please visit the Open Studio page for more information about these delightful events.
