Colony News

It's high summer here at the colony. Sultry days follow one another through July and on to August. The second of the four sessions is drawing to a close and the two visual artists, one photographer, and two writers have spent the past month in residence and are wishing they could slow time as the last few days unfold. During the day the colony is quiet, save for the sounds of creative industry, the birds, and the choruses of tree frogs that resonate from the woods surrounding the colony. A deep sense of gratitude is palpable in each artist, as they talk about what they have accomplished in a daily routine steeped in the serenity of hard work in a quiet studio surrounded by natural beauty.
As ever, the jurors were presented with a very difficult task this year. From the 164 applications of remarkable quality that were received this year, the jurors had to choose only 20 who would be granted the opportunity and privilege of spending a month at the colony. By the end of September twenty literary and visual artists from all corners of New York State will have spent a month at the Saltonstall Arts Colony this summer.
The artists and writers who will be at the Saltonstall Arts Colony this summer are as follows:

The Saltonstall Foundation is proud to have hosted more than 200 hundred artists and writers who have been awarded residencies at the Saltonstall Arts Colony. Every year the jurors continue to be impressed with the quality of applicants, and often the decisions, as to who will be awarded a residency, are difficult to reach.
There are two jurors for each of the four categories, Poetry, Prose, Photography, and Painting/Sculpture/Visual Arts. The jurors are chosen from an ever-growing list of serious and highly qualified artists in each discipline. Each year the jurors take their charge very seriously, and every year we are graced with the very best artists and writers New York State has to offer.
Open Studio Sundays
At the end of each session there is the opportunity for the artists to show the public what they have been doing during their month in residence, and for the public to visit The Saltonstall Arts Colony. Except for these four Sunday afternoons the colony is closed to the public from mid-May through the end of September. Please visit the Open Studio page for more information about these delightful events.
