Workshops for 2010

The Saltonstall Foundation Continues its Workshop Schedule for 2010

The Saltonstall Foundation continues to be interested in hosting and presenting workshops that are available to the local community. In order to present the annual series of workshops we look to the New York State Council on the Arts for financial assistance. The past year has been a challenging one for all of us, and NYSCA has not been exempt from the economic turmoil. However, we recently received sufficient funds from NYSCA to present a number of workshops that will be scheduled during the summer and early fall. We began the series during Teachers' Week with two workshops designed with high school Art and English teachers in mind.

We are beginning to schedule the workshops that will be presented by the Saltonstall Foundation later this summer. These workshops are designed for all, but some are targeted to youth and to seniors. These workshops will be held at convenient downtown locations.

The workshops will include: Writing & Publishing After 60 with Ginnah Howard; Digital Basics with Andrew Gillis; Writing from the Heart with Mary Gilliland; A Caligraphic Approach to Drawing with Mayumi Ishino; Setting as Source with Rachael Wren and Cecily Parks; How to Publish Your Poetry/Fiction/Essays with Mary Gilliland. Others will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. Check the site again as the summer wanes to see where and when they will be held.

September

Wednesday, September 1
Writing & Publishing After 60

To be held at Life Long 119 W. Court Street, Ithaca, New York 607.273.1511
10:00AM–4PM
New York State author, Ginnah Howard and The Constance Saltonstall Foundation will present a workshop at LifeLong. In this day-long workshop Ginnah will read from her first novel, Night Navigation, that was published last year. There will be an extended discussion about publishing one's first novel after age 60, as well as time for writing exercises that offer the participant a way of connecting the rich resources of past memories to the present. Lunch and refreshments will be served.

Workshop fee: $25 for Lifelong members; $30 from non-members.

Saturday, September 25
Digital Basics with Andy Gillis

To be held at the Saltonstall Arts Colony, 435 Ellis Hollow Creek Road, Ithaca, New York
9:30AM–3PM

This full-day workshop will focus on the basics of digital photography, from taking digital images to creating the files you need to either print your photographs or comply with required standards. It will be useful to you if you are a visual artist who wants to upload photos of your work to the web or include images with a grant application, or if you are a photo enthusiast who wants to share your images, either in print or digital form, with family and friends.  In this workshop you will gain an understanding of RAW files, JPEG, TIFF and GIF files, and how to modify file sizes in Photoshop. Although they are not requirements for the workshop, it will be helpful if you are able to bring your images on cards or CDs, a card-reader, and a laptop. There will be a PowerPoint presentation and printouts of the presentation for you to take with you. The workshop begins at 9:30AM and goes until 3PM. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The workshop is limited to 15 participants, and the fee for the workshop is $30 for the full day. Please contact the Saltonstall Foundation office (tel: 607.539.3146; email: artscolony@saltonstall.org ) to register and make payment arrangements. Pre-registration is required.

October

Saturday October 23
Setting as Source

To be held at the Saltonstall Arts Colony, 435 Ellis Hollow Creek Road, Ithaca, NY
9:30AM–4PM

Why do we become attached to places?  How does a place become something more vital than background?  What can art add to a place, and vice versa?  In this day-long interdisciplinary workshop, we will explore how settings, both real and imagined, inspire visual and literary works of art.  Led by a painter and a poet, participants will first discuss examples of other artists’ approaches to place, including: representation, abstraction, narrative, and lyric.  Then participants will experiment with various modes and mediums themselves, transitioning back and forth between drawing and writing.  This workshop will emphasize experimentation and revision rather than the production of a finished project.  Participants should leave this workshop with seeds of many ideas for future work. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Please bring a photograph or object from a place that is dear to you to the workshop.

Workshop fee: $35

The leaders of this workshop, Rachael Wren, painter and Cecily Parks, poet, are both recipients of a Summer Residency at the Saltonstall Arts Colony in 2009.
