Internships

The Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts & Saltonstall Arts Colony has various internship opportunities available during the 2015 – 2016 academic year, as well as next summer (2016). These are unpaid positions (sorry!), but days and hours per week are entirely flexible. We think this is a pretty great place, and we’d love to introduce you to Saltonstall.

To Apply

Please attach your resume to an email that briefly describes your interest in the position and send it to:
artscolony@saltonstall.org

All inquiries will receive a personal reply. Please note: your own transportation is essential. We are located in the Ellis Hollow neighborhood, a rural area about 7 miles east of downtown Ithaca. (Carpooling from downtown with Saltonstall’s director might also be possible).

Fall Semester, 2015; Spring Semester, 2016; Summer 2016

Arts Administration Internship

Are you interested in learning more about how small not-for-profit arts organizations survive and thrive? Ithaca is home to a small arts colony dedicated to supporting New York State artists and writers by providing two- and four-week summer residencies, subsidized retreat space in the off-season, and various public events.

Our arts administration internship is designed to give you hands-on experience in nearly every aspect of running a small arts organization, including but not limited to: marketing, finance/fundraising, organizational management, program development, and general office administration.

Saltonstall has a full-time staff of one. You would be working directly with the organization’s director, Lesley Williamson, and occasionally with other interns and/or volunteers.

Note: during the Fall semester, there will be some focus on marketing and promoting our yearly Call for Entries for the 2016 summer season.

Desired qualities

Curiosity, open-mindedness, willingness to ask lots of questions, ability to work alone in a quiet environment

Desired skills

Ability to write clearly; facility with basic website editing programs and various social media platforms; graphic design skills and knowledge of Excel a plus but not a requirement

Fall Semester, 2015; Spring Semester, 2016

Content Management Internship

Can be based remotely

This internship is very specific and focuses on securing content for the pages of more than 250 individual alumni on our website. This area of our site recently underwent a complete overhaul, and we’re working to update all of our alums’ pages.

This internship combines web research, personal communications, and outreach to connect with our alumni. You would be responsible for contacting artists and writers from all over New York State and obtaining up-to-date biographical information, website links, and images of their work or written pieces which you would then upload onto their page within our site.

Desired qualities

Ability to communicate clearly and with ease with artists and writers; ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Desired skills

Strong writing skills; facility with basic web site editing and photo editing programs

Summer, 2016; could continue into the fall semester

Program & Multi-Media Internship

This internship coincides with our summer residencies and corresponding Open House events so you would be supporting and interacting with our residents periodically throughout the summer. Our residency program extends from mid-May through the end of September, so the ideal candidate has the opportunity to continue his/her internship into or through the Fall semester.

This internship is similar to the general “Arts Administration” internship but with a greater focus on generating visual and written content for Saltonstall’s web site, e-newsletters, and social media applications. You should feel comfortable behind a camera and be confident taking still and moving images with a journalistic eye and a marketing mindset.

Desired qualities

Ability to interact discretely and with ease with artists and writers; curiosity, open-mindedness, willingness to ask lots of questions, ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Desired skills

Strong writing skills; somewhat advanced photography and video skills; facility with basic website editing programs and various social media platforms; graphic design skills a plus but not a requirement
