The Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts is looking for that special food-loving, art-loving someone to join our team as the next colony chef!

Arts Colony Chef

The Saltonstall Arts Colony Chef plays an integral role in the day-to-day operations of the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, located 8 miles east of downtown Ithaca, New York.

 

Saltonstall is a small not-for-profit organization serving New York State artists and writers with fully-funded residencies, subsidized retreat space, and various literary and exhibition opportunities throughout the year. The colony consists of five unique one-bedroom apartments and studios housed in two contemporary buildings. The Foundation’s office is also located on the property, which includes 200 acres of varied natural habitats.

 

This position, which we hope will be permanent for the right person, reports to the Executive Director and provides a unique opportunity to combine a passion for food and cooking with a love and appreciation for artists and writers.

 

The chef has broad flexibility and autonomy with menu-planning guided only by the legacy of our vegetarian kitchen and by the dietary sensitivities of the artists and writers in residence. Groups of five live and work together at the colony for month-long stays from mid-May to late-August and for two-week stays in September.

Key responsibilities:

 

  • General hours are 1:00 – 6:00pm, Monday – Friday
  • Prepare dinner five nights a week for five people
  • Design dinner menus that are vegetarian, healthy and in-season when possible
  • Grocery shop for five, 2-4 times per week, as needed
  • Stay within budget
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen throughout each session
  • Prepare light hors d’oeuvres for one small weekend event, once per month
  • Exhibit sensitivity and respect towards a broad range of people with diverse and varied backgrounds and life experiences

 

Skills and qualifications:

 

  • Must be flexible, mature, responsible and able to work independently in a private, residential, shared kitchen
  • Must possess a broad understanding of food sensitivities and allergies and adjust menus as needed
  • Must have a car

Compensation

$12,500 with the option of joining Saltonstall’s health insurance group plan
