Elizabeth Garrison (1996)

elizabethgar“My paintings are small personal improvisations on canvas that explore the mandala. Some are purely geometric symmetrical or circular diagrams. Others contain recognizable images or symbols radiating from, or spinning around, the center. I became interested in these radial images when they began appearing in my visual field during meditation.

Painting compositions initially emerge as informal drawings. I open my awareness to the unknown with as little intervention as possible from the conscious mind while drawing. Over time my process has become less self conscious and increasingly playful. There is evidence that both creating and looking at mandalas brings consciousness to a more peaceful and unified state. Because of this, I have chosen to dedicate my art making to this direction.”

Garrison attended Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. She has taught art at the Community School of Music and Arts as well as at public schools. Presently, she is a treatment specialist at the Tompkins County Department of Health, facilitating art and writing groups.
