About the job:

We are in search of a part-time private chef with experience in vegetarian cuisine to prepare dinners in Saltonstall’s kitchen for three retreats in 2027:

    • Local teachers: February 15—18 and April 5—8 (four dinners each retreat)
    • Hupstate Residency for NYS circus artists: April 11—17 (seven dinners)

Teacher retreats include six people. The Hupstate residency can occasionally include up to eight people.

Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, located in the Ellis Hollow neighborhood, eight miles east of downtown Ithaca, on the traditional lands of the Cayuga Nation.

Founded in 1995, Saltonstall is a small not-for-profit organization serving New York State artists and writers with free, stipend-supported residencies, low-cost retreat space, and various literary and exhibition opportunities throughout the year.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Strong cooking skills and experience with vegetarian cuisine (we are a vegetarian residency!)
  • Ability to create inventive, flavorful vegetarian meals and prepare them independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and a professional, friendly demeanor with an ability to interact easily and respectfully with creative people
  • Ability to meet deadlines effectively
  • Ability to problem-solve and adapt to various dietary restrictions (most common are gluten-free and vegan)
  • Strong work ethic, resourcefulness and initiative to “get the job done”
  • Interest in the arts and artists communities welcome

Physical demands

This position requires that the chef shop for all groceries and deliver them unaided to the residency (including stairs), then prepare, serve, and clean up after meals independently.

Pay and schedule

This in-person position is for dinners during two 4-night retreats and one 7-night retreat.

  • Teacher Retreats: $850/each + grocery reimbursement
  • Hupstate Retreat: $1200 + grocery reimbursement

Additional requirements:

Due to Saltonstall’s location, candidate must have a car or a reliable all-season mode of transportation.
